Apex is really two tree towns in one. The blocks around downtown carry mature willow oaks, pecans, and old hardwoods with real spread, while the subdivisions built out along Highway 55 and Olive Chapel Road are dominated by builder-planted loblolly pines now thirty years tall and much closer to rooflines than anyone planned.

The trees in Apex
Downtown streets are hardwood-heavy: willow oak, white oak, pecan, and a lot of mature crape myrtle. Once you get into the 1990s and 2000s developments, it is pine — loblolly planted in rows, thinned by storms, and now leaning over fences and shingles. Sweetgum and red maple fill in the wooded edges, and the sweetgums are the ones dropping limbs first.
Ice storms are the big event here. Loblolly pines load with ice, bend, and snap 20 to 30 feet up, and the failures cluster in neighborhoods where a development thinned the surrounding woods and left individual pines wind-exposed.
Older lots near downtown bring a different problem: red oaks planted close to foundations, now filling gutters and lifting walkways, where the right answer is often pruning and root-area repair rather than removal.
Permits and HOA rules in Apex
Trees inside your own yard in Apex generally need no town permit. Street trees in the right-of-way, trees inside recorded tree-save or buffer areas, and trees in HOA-governed neighborhoods are the exceptions. Downtown Apex also has landscape standards worth checking. Call the Town of Apex Planning Department, or your HOA, before removing anything near the street or a marked buffer — and we will flag it if a tree looks regulated when we quote.
